Facilities
Justice Center
Justice Center is the 1200 seat multi-purpose gym on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. The gym opened for the 1965-1966 basketball season and is the current home for men's basketball, women's basketball, and volleyball. Justice Center also houses the main Athletic Training room as well as coaches offices and locker rooms for baseball. Justice Center is attached to the newer on campus Health and Fitness center (HFC) which houses a multipurpose student and practice gym, indoor track, two weight room facilities, racquet ball courts, the campus pool, campus recreation, and intramural sports. The HFC and Justice Center also house the Athletic Department offices, Ticket Office, and all other athletic coaches offices. Justice Center will remain a part of UNC Asheville even after the completion of the new Kimmel Arena. UNC Asheville volleyball has announced that they will stay in Justice Center and make the facility their permanent home.Kimmel Arena
Kimmel Arena is the proposed 3000 seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville.Ground is currently scheduled to be broken during the fall of 2008 and the facility is expected to be completed in time for the 2010/2011 Basketball season. The proposed facility is just over 120,000 square feet in size and will sit on what is currently the UNC Asheville Tennis Center and Upper Parking Lot. The new arena will fit into and on the slope immediately to the North side of Justice Center and will be attached to the old gym as well as the on campus HFC via covered walkway. Upon completion Kimmel Arena will become the the new home to Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball. The arena will also house new Athletic Department offices, locker rooms, a new weight room and workout facilitiy, the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame. The facility will also become the home base for UNC Asheville's Health and Wellness Promotion major and will house dedicated classrooms and faculty offices.
Greenwood Baseball Field
Opened in the Spring of 1988 Greenwood Baseball field has not only been the home of UNC Asheville baseball, but also one of the homes of summer collegiate baseball in the Asheville region. The field is located adjacent to Greenwood Soccer Field (which lies to the South) and overlooks both Campus Drive (to the North) and the Strauss Track and Field Facility (to the East/South East). The field has undergone some minor changes since opening in 1988 but remains largely the same.
Greenwood Soccer Field
Located adjacent to Greenwood Baseball Field Greenwood Soccer Field is the home for UNC Asheville men's and women's soccer teams. The field features full locker-room facilities for both the men and women, and on game the complex is transformed into soccer complex complete with press-tent.
McCormick Baseball Field
McCormick Field is the the alternative home of UNC Asheville Baseball. Located in downtown Asheville the park is the everyday home to Colorado Rockies Single-A affiliate Asheville Tourists and seats about 4,000 people. The Bulldogs generally play about 10 games per season at McCormick and also play a yearly exhibition game against the Tourists the first week in April. McCormick field was originally built in 1924 and has been since rebuilt and updated several times. The latest reconstruction was finished before the 2006 season. During the 2006 reconstruction all of the outfield walls were replaced and raised to the current heights. A state of the art scoreboard and jumbotron/video board were also installed into the right field wall. Field boxes were added at dugout level, the home and away clubhouses were refurbished and the batting cage under the 3rd base seats was rebuilt. Additionally the club seats and party area down the 1st baseline were refurbished. A complete history of McCormick Field and additional pictures are available on the McCormick Field page of this site.
Straus Track
The Karl Straus Track has been a fixture at UNC Asheville for over 25 years. Severely outdated and also in a greatly deteriorated condition the track has been unable to host any competitive collegiate or Big South event in almost a decade. The track is located directly behind the HFC building and just adjacent to the Greeenwood Sports (baseball & soccer) complex. The track is also overlooked by both the governors village and governors hall dorms and residences. The track complex was un-named until 1992 when Asheville Attorney and UNCA donor Karl Straus had the complex named after him. UNC Asheville Chancellor Sam Schuman had the track named after Straus. Plans have been completed for a renovation and a fundraising drive has begun. Details and artists renditions of the new track, stadium, concessions, locker-rooms, and other parts of the facility can be seen at www.uncatrackpledge.com.
UNCA Tennis Center
The UNCA Tennis Center was opened in the 1970s and is still the home of both the Men's and Women's Tennis teams (as of the 2007/08 season). The Tennis Center is scheduled to undergo a move and upgrade as the new Kimmel Arena will be built on the hill where the Tennis Center currently sits. Plans have not been proposed for a new location at this time. The Tennis Center consists of 5 main courts that sit on the edge of a hill overlooking the Straus Track facility. The end courts provide a view of not only the track facility but also the entire Greenwood complex (baseball and soccer), as well as the back of the HFC Building. Directly behind the courts is a hill that leads down to the auxiliary baseball/greenwood complex parking lot. The Tennis Center also has one "stadium court" that is offset from the other five and is back away from the hillside. This stadium court sits directly accross from the HFC/Justice Center building. The Tennis Center has the distinction of hosting the first ever Big South Women's Tennis Tournament in 1987.
