sadsite wrote:just so we're clear ... I am one with a fairly decent baseball background ... qualified interest in Bulldog Baseball ... want to see the program not just improve, but be relevant in college baseball. I am a fan of Tom Smith anh his accomplishments as a high school coach, but not a fan of the hire. Whether TS was directly responsible for a couple of the worst years in Bulldog baseball's not-so impressive history or not ... the fact is, he was there every day. IMO, TS played the game as a volunteer & came in early everyday, made sure JC and the admin saw him there, played dumb as to the problems - maybe even provided his opinions without coming across as disloyal and used his seniority to shine a light on himself to a not-so educated AD about what is a normal practice of college coaches (volly or not) ... that is, they should work long hours. JC, because of her lack of knowledge of college baseball became enamored by TS & his work ethic, and didn't realize - that is the norm with college baseball coaches (good or bad). The fact is, as an assistant you have many opportunities to make your mark on a program & team, despite the other leadership figures. Tom's wisdom, experience in coaching (not college), ties to community, should have made a difference the past two years and should have become evident ... not been a part of the tailspin. Those things he is promising now, if he was doing his job the last two years ... should already have become a reality. Instead, it looks to me like he allowed the tailsping to continue for his own status (his own son was making statements over six months ago that his Daddy was going to be the next head coach) ... Let's remember TS came on not-so-long (little over a yr) after the dogs won the tourney championship. The downfall of the program was to not take advantage of that 4-5 day success & boost recruiting the next few years. Winning a championship & getting to a Regional should assist recruiting for 2-3 years at least ... instead we used as a time to relax. Fact is, since TS has arrived ... no prominent area players have been recruited, & batting averages have rapidly declined. What mark has he made as an assistant. However, I tip my hat to him ... he managed to get promoted after a 9-42 season ... what a great world we live in!
My crystal ball... July 2012
3 seasons in the books ... 3 seasons with more than 9 wins
3 seasons in the books ... 3 seasons finishing 6th in the conference or below
3 seasons in the books ... you start to hear rumblings from the paper & HC of excuses blaming the lack of funding & support
at this time, let's remember that TS has promised to win baseball championships consistently ... with the funding and resources that are in place. The future isn't hard to predict ... give him 3 years & he'll be crying "lack of funds & support" for the reasons he hasn't been able to get the dogs over the top. Will he be saying "BP" or "PB" (c'mon can't we come up with something better than that) after 3 years. They'll have more wins than this past season, but that is becasue he probably won't have an assistant that has alterior motives like he did at one point causing players to question authority or lack there of.
... can't wait to hear the slashing I take for this one!

Let's just hope, for our baseball program's sake, that he doesn't throw a baseball like an 11yr old left handed schoolgirl... similar to a certain Commander-in-Chief that we all know and love. Good Lord that was awful.

I heard they were interviewing some guy named Jim Perry for head assistant. He looks a lot like Tim Perry but with a fake mustache on.
