Kimmel Arena Construction Updates (6/11 New Pictures!!)

Straight from the hardwood of the Justice Center...

I am surprised that we are doing all of the construction at the same time, but I'll certainly take it! I really like the idea of tying everything together with the little park/walkway. I think getting the track facility online is a huge plus because so many people within University and the community use it. It really isn't just for the track team and was needed before the baseball/soccer gets upgraded. I'll be surprised if they get it done by October.

The place really looks different, especially from the Reuter Center. A lot of dirt has been moved. Certainly a long way to go. The fact that recruits will be seeing more than pictures and promises now is really great.

Just so you guys know. The new contruction pictures are on uncabulldogs.com. There is a button called construction update right in the middle of the home page. Click there and amazingly there is a link to the photo gallery. The pictures are also under the facilities tab at the top, there is page about Kimmel Arena and Straus Track and they also have photo galleries. So check back each week for more pics.

haha, i get it i get it.... I just think having live pictures is cool, seeing all the ants scurrying around. Mostly, because I'm too far away to visit asheville vert often. But i'll take my pictures every 3-4 weeks and not complain anymore :)

Hahaha.. For once, dare I say- I agree with Cat's!!

I'm impressed with the obsession for this building project.. it's just construction folks!! DIrt gets moved, foundation will be poured, walls to be set, roof trusses, siding, windows, roof.. dried in.. then lots of dust inside, later it will open- then we should get excited!! It will be a wonderful addition to the athletics at UNCA, but the constant updates have the perception that we're depsarate.. patience!!

Personally, I've always been excited by construction - which is why I'm a city planner. I think it hearkens back to my childhood obsession with bulldozers and dumptrucks. Come on king, don't tell me you didn't have a toy bulldozer when you were 3...

Oh absolutely- I have a scar from a Tonka accident when I was 4...

I'm just kinda poking fun at the video camera idea/constant updating that were prevalent thoughts here once.. the pics every 3-4 weeks is cool & what we all expect to see.. Cat's is still venting from the WCU foosball season...

Its just my -- wish that UNCA had some of the things that bigger schools have. Like a web-cam on custruction, or updates more often. The shots from above are very cool and construction has come a LONG way since the last photo updates...

And I agree with born to run -- i just think its cool they are digging around in the dirt, and obviously they have come a long way from just pushing dirt around :)

We had a pretty epic trucktown when I was young. I think I wanted to be a bulldozer driver at that point.

I think construction pictures can probably be helpful to those who don't know much about UNCA and who surf the web. A lot helpful? Nope, but some.

This came up at FlameFans a few weeks ago...... and now I see Winthrop is officially making the change at their building:

http://www.winthropfans.com/viewtopic.php?t=68914

I remember sitting in on a meeting back in....2007 maybe? And some ex basketball players mentioning to Janet that one feature that the new building had to have was a shutter system for intros. May not seem like a big deal but I think its one of the most unique features of basketball pre-games, the ability to shut off the lights and blast some sweet music during intros. Gives me chills whenever there's a good intro song/crowd goes crazy when the lights go off.

Anyway, Janet at the time said it was something that she hadn't really thought much about and said it was definitely something they'd try to remember....
Soooo Janet, remember.

Sounds like Winthrop is putting in a legit system with the strobes/spotlights too....

I wouldn't see why we would not have a shutter system in the new arena. That would be incredibly dumb. I went to the game at High Point last year and their intro's were amazing! It was like being at an NBA game in a really small arena. I went with KJ Garland and Joey Harrell and all they talked about after the game is how awesome the sound and lighting system was. I think this is actually a great for recruiting. Something so small can make a pretty big impact on recruiting.

On a side note, I just got a call from my dad who lives in Asheville. He went up this morning and checked out the progress of the arena. He was really excited. Said they have ALOT done. Said you can actually see where the seats are going to be and the roof is starting to be built as well. He also said there is a little building being built right next to the statue of Rocky?? I am guessing this would be an extra ticket sales booth but I really don't know. I think it is time for some new pictures. My dad also likes to exaggerate just like I do so I really don't know what to think. He did sound really excited though and just like myself, he can't wait for November 9th!!!

I've always thought that a shutter system intro is pretty out of place in places like High Point. Kind of like a fat girl putting on high heels to make her legs look good. It'll probably be okay at Winthrop.

With the warm days we've had & while I was on campus yesterday- the construction for Kimmel was bustling!!

I took a pic with my phone coming down the steps from Karpen from the library, not sure how to get it up & on here though (I will email it to someone who can! PM me your email- thx!)

You can definitely see from the Reuter Center height/parking areas the concrete stepdowns where the bleachers will be so that was pretty cool!!

Weather is supposed to be great through the weekend so I expect more progress as there were tons of graders, multiple cranes hoisting beams/roofing and with most of the mountain leveled & graded you can really see the footprint nicely- if voice & others don't take some updated pics soon, I may run over there early next week & take some.. if only I knew how to post them!!

if you have a way to put the image up...facebook, myspace, anywhere... then just use the "[img]" tag and you can put the picture right in the forum... Orrrr you can email it to me (uncafan@me.com) and I'll just upload it to this server and link it myself... either way :)

When I was down there for the alumni game I forgot to take pics the one day, and then the next day i was on campus for like 3 seconds and forgot again. But yeah, it was impressive. Especially looking back from the baseball field to see this huge frame of a building, it was awesome. Track work has stopped, unfortunately... But they are definitely making crazy progress on the basketball building.

Nice! Thanks for the heads up!

If you have a second, what's the deal with the track complex in terms of construction? I know when I was there for the baseball alumni events we were told construction on that project had stopped and the rumor was some funding concerns, but it looks like the tower/storage area on the left side has had a lot of work (among other things) so I'm assuming that project is continuing as well??

And I guess the other question no one seems to know the answer to -- are they waiting until the track "stadium" is completed to resurface the track itself, or is that just a -- wait until the spring project? Definitely looks like the continued warm weather is helping things move pretty quick, very cool to see....

Actually, I am yet to hear a good reason why Track is taking so long. Orginally, it was suppose to be completed by December (obviously that is not going to happen) there was a window of time they had to resurface the track before winter. They missed that window, so now they have to wait until spring to resurface. The Stadium should be completed before then. The rumor about lack of funding was a RUMOR. The money is there, they are moving very slowly, but they are moving. I still expect it to be finished by the outdoor season. Hopefully, the good weather will continue and they can find another gear.

Construction on the NCCHW is going very well. I am told we are about four months ahead of schedule on that. And King, that was funny...mean, but funny.
