Game 22: Radford

Postby UNCA Alum on Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:52 pm

You know their players and record.

They could potentially have four guys out on the court bigger than everybody that we have. Will be an interesting dynamic to watch.

Got to watch the second half of their loss at home to Liberty. LU packed into a tight 2-3 zone, essentially giving their perimeter players an open three whenever they wanted. Radford started off 0-17 from downtown and their guards were extremely hesitant to shoot the open shot. They finally ended up hitting one, but went 1-22 on the game.

They are shooting 28% from three point land on the season. Their four main threats are:

Blake Smith (31%, 22 made.. went 4-7 tonight)
Gorkem Sonmez (30%, 12 made in 12 games)
Amir Johnson (24%, 13 made)
Evan Faulkner (27%, 16 made)

Which means they'll probably shoot 17-25 on Saturday. Regardless, I say we pack it in a zone. I don't think they'll be able to match up with our four guards on the other end. Chris Stepheson should have a field day.

I'm all for have a packing zone ready for when DJ is on the bench or when LF and Art are both on the floor. I think we need to be wise when employing the double team. We have picked up some cheap fouls on double teams for using too much body. Not exactly a horrible thing, especially if we get Jackson to play aggressive when he is on the defensive floor.

The thing RU has struggled with against us is foul trouble and I think we didn't do a great job of managing that aspect in the first match-up. We really need to recognize who is in trouble when working through the offense. We can't buy the calls, but putting them in position to give cheap fouls is key.

Side note is that Jackson put in some quality minutes against HPU.

I think all of this discussion at this time will be for not.. there's 7 inches of snow already at my house & it's still falling... I see little chance in tomorrow's game being played.. But RU is probably here in Asheville & since they're not going to travel with the weather this way they may move it to Monday or Tuesday & then move the VMI/RU game possibly?? Not sure how that would work actually- time will tell!!

I would think RU would want to go ahead & play since they're here & VMI's got to be a shorter road trip but who knows?

You never know.... it might just work. Actually, as you know it hurts our PRI when you lose.

Game is still on for 2pm.. Radford was already in town & the refs made it to Avl as well so they're gonna try to get it in..

If anyone at UNCA reads this (& I hear that y'all do) I then someone needs to go round up all the students on campus & get them to this game!!

The JC needs to be rockin'!! Big game..

yeah even though it's not technically a snow day, everybody should still be good and drunk by 2:00. Head on over to the Justice, get rowdy, watch us get seven in a row, and then carry on with your previously scheduled shenanigans.

Is anybody else having trouble opening up the Winthrop site? We had a nice little "High Point player chokes girlfriend" thread going, but it keeps on telling me that their account has been suspended?

WU board was down yesterday as well- account suspended, etc, etc..

No reason for the students not to come out.. Still think someone at UNCA needs to provide the catalyst though..

So much for getting the game in today. Could be a good game between Coastal and Winthrop at 4.

Anyone else watching this WU/CCU game??

The reporter girl is not so bright in her sideline spots...

Game pace definitely favoring WU right now.. CCU is jacking a lot of perimeter shots- WU is shooting is good percentage although I haven't seen the stats..

+ Chris Malcolm just said in that promo piece "my hops just grew!"- Nicely put...

Neither are the commentators. I would rather listen to Friedman. Coastal is playing the worst I have seen them play this year.

I was about to say.. that was clearly a charge, ball was out of Mantoris' hand..

Momentum moving in WU's direction- the Eagles are starting to pull away.. CCU will need to respond & take a good shot- WU has done a really good job forcing CCU into some low percentage attempts..

Coastal is just not playing very good defense and I think they have been disjointed on offense all game due to foul trouble at the point. Add that in with a road game and you just aren't going to have a great chance to win. It certainly helps WUs cause that they are shooting well from beyond the arc.

That "Ask the Player" segment during halftime needs to get put on YouTube immediately. Absolutely hilarious.

Winthrop is starting to turn it around a bit. They will be a Top 4 team in the league, which will keep Peele his job. Thankfully.

I think the girl is kind of hot.

If only WUpike were here. I agree though, I think we are 4-3 against Peele (with that championship loss).

WU letting CCU back in it.. should be an interesting last 2 minutes!!

I thought she was hot at first but then they did a close up late at halftime & I had to change my thoughts...

Post game show is pretty funny. Nicole is set up literally four feet away from the announcers. The same camera is covering both the announcers and Nicole's post game interviews.

And she'll say "back to you guys" and the camera guy will just pan over to the announcers sitting four feet away.

That sounds more like something we'd have going.... Just reminds you that for all their money and for all the claims from many of the WU faithful that they are somehow 'above' all of us... It can still be a decently level playing field in the BSC

Wouldn't hurt a bit to see PC beat CSU & GW beat HP in these next 2 games..

PC up 5 at the final media timeout (3:52 left) of the 1st half, 23-18- these teams went to OT in the 1st game at CSU..
