Game 21: High Point University

Postby GoUNCA on Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:58 am

Probable starters:
G Tehran Cox 3.6 APG
G Nick Barbour 18.4 PPG
G Eugene Harris 14.3 PPG
F Corey Law 5.7 RPG
C Cruz Daniels 5.4 RPG

Off the bench:
G David Singleton 6.0 PPG
G David Campbell 4.0 PPG
F Earnest Bridges 3.8 PPG
G Jairus Simms 3.5 PPG

High Point has two things for certain. 1) High Point will play about a bazillion guards and 2) there radio guys did a cheap MBA program and use business buzzwords as game analysis and are thus the most annoying in the Big South.

Barbour and Harris are dangerous behind the arc, so we need to get out on them. I think we'll fair better if we can force them into a halfcourt game. Daniels didn't really come back as an offensive presence this year, but he can definitely make his presence felt on the defensive end and on the glass. Law, Singleton, and Daniels are all somewhat prone to foul, but they run a lot of rotation so that also spreads out the fouls. A team that will foul (like HPU) but everyone plays doesn't necessarily encourage more conservative play so we could end up at the stripe a lot tonight.

All in all, if we are judicious with our fouls, keep in the shooters outside, and keep our heads about us we'll have a good shot at winning.

HP's lost 3 of their last 4, meanwhile Bulldogs have won their last 5 games.. hopefully this isn't one of those trap games for us.. HP is terrible on the road and have won 2 of 10 games away from HP this year.. We should win this game by 8-12 points- hopefully that ends up being the case this time around..

We lost the first game due to very poor shooting- 2 of 12 from 3 pt land, 4 of 12 from the FT line, had 19 TO's, and the team only recorded 1 blocked shot & we lost by 4 points on the road.. I don't see those numbers looking the same but I agree that we have to keep our heads in the game, protect the ball, and just take care of business tonight at the JC..

Defending Harris from the perimeter better wouldn't hurt the cause too much either.. we lost him repeatedly at HP- simply can't do that with the active Big South leader in made 3-pointers..

Good article I thought- those guys are definitely the key ingredients to the turn around we've seen..

Or..maybe we should get all defensive about KJ writing poor things about our guys like one of the WCU faithful.. Nah- let's just take the high road!

Hopefully that article won't prove to be a jiinx. Agreed though that we will go as far as JP and Dickey will take us. They have to handle the ball, shoot it well, and create for others.

Big game tonight. Can't have another letdown at home. I imagine it will be another nailbiter.

We've won five in a row. Don't need to change the starting lineup.

He'll get plenty of time.

Yeah, he's playing now. Wasn't really worried.

We just need to keep playing steady. Lucky that harris missed the three.

Not getting any loose balls. They look a lot quicker than us. Big threes by Barbour and Harris in the last two minutes.

Three fouls on Harris could be big. Hope he picks up a quick one in the second.

That mystery point better not come back to haunt us! Harris hit a long two that I bet the books counted for a three.

Dickey and Cunningham should be well rested in the second half, with both of them having sat out with two fouls. Jaron Lane is going to be very good.

Terrible defense on the last play of the half. I don't care if the guy can't shoot. If you stand at the free throw line and give him a 20ft running start.. he's going to go around you. That one was on the coaches.

Up by 4/5 at half.

Yeah, Cox is a horrible shooter you have to know he's going for a drive and pass. Not a great defensive showing. Primm hasn't really played well. The large foul differential killed us there for about three minutes. The score on the upper half runs on the officially scoreboard I thought and the point just kind of appeared late in the half.

Gotta love that hustle by Dickey and Primm. We are playing hard this half.

Up by 9. Insert standard "We could put them away right here, but you know they are going to make this a ballgame" comment now.

Not rebounding well out of this zone.

Stepheson gets lazy on D.

Going to the stall ball.

Every time we go to stall ball we lose a lead. Primm is playing much better in the second half. DJ seems frustrated when he is on the court.

And there is that fouling a jump shooter (thought it was a three).

We still haven't fouled a guy shooting a three pointer yet. That has got to be coming. Probably this possession.

Free throws. Handle the ball. Six in a row.

Down three with a minute left, Charleston Southern goes with the highly effective "Jamarco Warren dribble it by himself for 20 seconds near midcourt and then call timeout" play.

Let's hope they draw up something a little better coming out of the timeout.

Good win for the doggers. A little choppy at times, but we decided not to blow a lead down the stretch. Solid games by several players as has been the usual over the last 5-6 games. Every game is big in conference, but taking out Radford next time out could be a huge swing in the standing in our favor. Need DJ to bring his A game next time out.

And I love that Warren play.

Charleston Southern misses a free throw that could have tied it with 30 seconds left. Winthrop misses the front end. CSU gets the ball back and the same guy (Kelvin Martin) misses the front end of a one and one after getting fouled.

Winthrop goes to the line with 15 seconds left. One and one. Mantorris Robinson misses another front end. Corbin gets the offensive rebound. CSU blocks it out of bounds.

Winthrop goes back to the line with 11 seconds left shooting one and the bonus. Andre Jones makes the first. Misses the second. Charleston Southern drives down and takes a terrible fadeaway 17ft shot at the buzzer. Winthrop wins by two.

Probably the worst two minutes of basketball that I've ever watched.

Thanks for the updates.. ESPN Big South scores on the phone doesn't like to refresh sometimes..

Game tonight was another good win.. What is impressing me the most right now is that we are responding when teams make that late game run- earlier in the year we let teams make that run & then did not respond to allow some games to slip away.. The last couple of games we took it on the chin from around 12min-6 mins left but then put together our own run to pull back away the final few minutes- particularly the last 4 conference games (@ LU, WU, PC, HP).. We are indeed closing games out, making FT's, protecting the ball down the stretch against pressure, making big shots, spreading the court & running clock on last minutes possessions- all really good things that result in WINS!

Having 5 guys in double figures doesn't hurt.. shooting 63.3% FG, 50% from 3 (missed some wide open looks though..), 80% (16 of 20) from the FT line.. Did have 15 TO's but really none down the stretch when it mattered..

HP crushed us on the boards tonight though- granted we got 10 blocks, but we sacrificed some rebounds in getting those blocks- I'm not sure if that's good or not.. HP put up 24 more attempts than we did and have 21 offensive boards (34 total to UNCA's 26)..

Will need to rebound better with the Highlanders coming in town Saturday if the weather doesn't force that game to be moved/postponed due to possible winter storm due to hit tomorrow evening- I think that would be bad for us as RU is ripe for the picking with the number of road games they have endured the past 10 days or so..

Yeah we are going to struggle on the boards with that smaller lineup. Especially when we get beat on penetration and John has to step up to stop the ball.

Advantage we have on offense with four guards > rebounding disadvantage on defense

In my opinion, at least. It's just something we are going to have to deal with and get used to.

I liked that JP had 12 assists and High Point had 9.
