BIG SOUTH STANDINGS

Postby kingaling42 on Sun Jan 17, 2010 2:47 pm

Figured it was time to create a running thread for standings in conference..

Big South
1. Coastal Carolina 7-1 +1½...................(@ CSU Saturday)
2. Radford 5-2 1½ games back...............(VMI Thursday/ Liberty Saturday)
3. Charleston Southern 5-3 2 games back.. (CCU Saturday)
T-4. High Point 4-3 2½ games back......... (Liberty Thursday/VMI Saturday)
T-4. Liberty 4-3 2½ games back............. (@ HP Thursday/@ RU Saturday)
T-4. Winthrop 4-3 2½ games back........... (@ UNCA Thursday/@ G-W Saturday)
7. NC-Asheville 3-4 3½ games back........(Bluefield Monday/Winthrop Thursday/Presby Saturday)
8. Gardner-Webb 2-5 4½ games back...... (Presby Thursday/Winthrop Saturday)
T-9. Virginia Military 1-6 5½ games back.. (@ RU Thursday/@ HP Saturday)
T-9. Presbyterian 1-6 5½ games back...... (@ G-W Thursday/@ UNCA Saturday)

VA road trip was huge for UNCA to climb back into the lower-middle part of the pack- Key games for us now to take care of Home court these next few games- especially against similar/worse teams.. Not unexpected to think a split series is good for UNCA right now with some comparable teams- you just can't drop the home game in the process!!

My weekly outlook... Humbly submitted for your input/scrutiny...
CCU/CSU game looks more interesting than anyone would ever have thought at this point in the year.. (I'll take CCU)
Radford with 2 home games... (I predict 2 wins for the Highlanders)
HP/Liberty game might be interesting- I predict HP will split (I'm thinking VMI sneaks up on them!)
Liberty with a tough week on the road & could easily be 2 more losses for the Flames..
Winthrop hasn't played well on the road- hopefully that will continue vs UNCA, but this game will probably be a low scoring affair... (WU splits this week with win over GW)
G-W with 2 home games with 2 defensive minded teams may be tough to see at best a split.. GW loses to both Presby & WU
VMI drops game to RU/upsets HP on the road (crazy hunch- plus it would help the Bulldogs- they'll prob get smashed now!)
Presby is a tough team- nothing to lose but games.. At best they split- hopefully we don't provide the win.. I predict they beat G-W, UNCA wins..

Mid-week update..

Big South
1. Coastal Carolina 7-1 +1½...................(@ CSU Saturday)
2. Radford 6-2 1 game back...............(Liberty Saturday)
T-3. Charleston Southern 5-3 2 games back.. (CCU Saturday)
T-3. High Point 5-3 2 games back......... (VMI Saturday)
T- 5. NC-Asheville 4-4 3 games back........(Presby Saturday)
T-5. Winthrop 4-4 3 games back........... (@ G-W Saturday)
T-5. Liberty 4-4 3 games back............. (@ RU Saturday)
8. Gardner-Webb 3-5 4 games back...... (Winthrop Saturday)
T-9. Virginia Military 1-7 6 games back.. (@ HP Saturday)
T-9. Presbyterian 1-7 6 games back...... (@ UNCA Saturday)

UNCA currently owns tie-breaker over LU/WU with wins over both teams.. I know it's way too early for too much breakdown but good to keep up with some of this as the next month plays out...

Need to take care of business at home here these next few games. If it stays the way it is staying, I would honestly rather get a 4/5 seed than a 2/3 seed just because I think we match up a lot better with Coastal than Radford.

It would certainly be nice for VMI to pick up a win over HPU, but I don't see that happening. Interesting SC coast rivalry game. I'm actually glad we have the early game, I may get to watch a little bit of it.

My predicted winners for saturday: CCU, RU, WU, HPU, UNCA (homer pick; I'm concerned)

Agree, however I wouldn't mind the 4 seed or better for the opening round hosted game... We certainly match up better with CCU, but RU's bench is really suspect & they're not nearly as deep as other teams so in a tourney setting, several games over several days.. I'm kinda split on the best matchup for UNCA in that setting.. I will feel better once we play at CCU & look at that result since the home court advantage also comes into play...

VMI is actually up by 4 on HPU. towards then end of the half. Which is weird because HPU plays the most value added, synergistic, intense, high excitement, viral, dynamite, cutting edge, game changing, paradigm shifting, thinking outside the box brand of basketball ever.

In other news, Liberty beats RU on the road without Ohman.

My humble thoughts for this weeks action...

CCU- will have a tough week playing 2 physical teams on the road @ PC & @ WU.. I'd expect them to sweep both games especially if Chad Gray shows up vs WU this time around..

Radford- will have an even tougher week with 3 straight road games as they have to make up their Dec. 19th game at JMU- we should be a in a good position as their bench is suspect and that many games in one week could take it's toll on the Big 3.. I predict they go 1-2 this week beating GW

CSU- will have a tough time at WU as the Eagles look to even the score after losing at CSU ~3 weeks ago.. I'm looking for PC to sneak up on CSU- I think they go 1-1 this week...

HP- Bulldogs will be looking to even the score Thursday but HP is always a tough win for us for whatever reason- it will be close unless our shooting is on.. HP goes 1-1.. if G-W would play Flittner/MacMillan more they could beat HP as well...

UNCA- I think we split this week- would love to see us go 2-0 & we certainly are playing well enough to do that.. I just feel like our defense is suspect & I never feel good about playing HP- hope I'm wrong!!

WU- Eagles shooting is starting to improve but it's still inconsistent- they don't seem to have a go-to player & that creates some poor shot selection at times... Eagles host CSU & then CCU- I'm really thinking that WU could drop both of these games, I don't see them beating CCU but I think CSU if the Bucs continue their high shooting % can certainly take the Eagles as well.. WU probably goes 1-1 as I'm giving them the edge over CSU for now...

Liberty- hosts VMI and on their home floor they probably don't lose to the Keydets.. VMI showed this week that they can beat many teams when they're on.. tough call for me but I think Liberty wins a close game..

GW- I think GW drops both games to RU & HP this week simply since their coach is distancing the previous coaches recruits so much that he's not even starting his 2 best players in Flittner & MacMillan.. He's an idiot!!

VMI- tunes up on a NAIA team before heading to the Vines- that setup may help VMI if they continue to shoot well Tuesday night- I may have to change my pick before the VMI/LU tilt..

Presby- CCU beats the Blue Hose but I using my upset pick (I got that VMI/HP pick right!!) this week to say that Presby beats CSU...

Obviously a long way to go and anything possible can happen with this team, but holding serve this week at home will go a long way to securing a home game for the Big South tournament and provide us with a lot of confidence heading into the tail end of the season.

Thinking ahead.. but 7-4 with games @ Presbyterian, Gardner Webb, Liberty, and VMI will have me feeling pretty good about a 3rd place finish or better.

Man a win on Saturday would be HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE. Especially headed to the dreaded SC beach trip, where we always seem to go 0-2.

Very big game- at this point with teams so stacked up in the middle of the standings they're all big right now it seems..

One game at a time before we get to that SC beach trip.. RU comes in having played 6 games in 16 days, including 3 games this week as UNCA will be the 4th game since including last Saturday (+ they will turn around to play @VMI Tuesday night)- they have lost 2 of their last 3 by winning tonight at GW- GW had 22 TO's & shot 21.1% from 3 pt land (4 of 19) tonight- RU was only 20-37 from the FT line though.. RU outrebounded GW 44-30 (21 offensive boards)...

Big game.. Let's Go Dogs!!

If we were actually playing on the team, yes.

As fans, it really doesn't matter if we look ahead or not. We can deal with more than one game at a time.

But yeah, big game on Saturday.

Why does that beach trip screw us every year? I could never understand it, but when you got back home you look down and your 1-1 or 0-2 and that was when CCU nor CSU was very good.
..today you are bulldogs. Which means every other bulldog is your brother. You will all go out into the world...some of you will not come back. Bulldogs die, thats what were here for. But the Bulldog Pride will live forever...which means YOU live forever.

I know when I played those gyms (Kimbel & the Fieldhouse) although small like the JC were also never even close to being a third full of people- it's amazingly difficult to get up to play in those atmospheres for some reason... similar to practice moreso than a game..

It's funny the 2 years that we played them on the "beach trip" we went 1-1 ('94) & 0-2 ('96), but the other 2 years when we played them on seprarate trips we went 2-0 both times ('95 & '97)... Since the early 2000's the 2away games at CSU/CCU have always been played in the same trip I believe as I can't recall the last time that trip was separate..

We won at Charleston Southern my soph year. I think.

Which would have put us at 1-7 over the four years on the beach trip.

We can have a few fake game threads though where we get mad at DJ for fouling, wonder how in the world that guy has gotten hot from downtown, and lamenting the fact that we fouled another guy shooting a three pointer.

My take on today's games..

CCU/RU: I believe CCU will beat Radford today to avenge the loss in Conway + Radford just can't keep getting away with missing so many FTs down the stretch of games..

PC/WU: WU should take care of Presby at home- this game will either as being close or WU will run away with it..

UNCA/VMI: More snow/ice here in Avl- should keep the Keydets from getting hot from outside.. we match up well with VMI, hopefully we don't feed into their game of jacking 3s- JW, Jaron, Chris, DJ should have nice games with points in the paint..

CSU/HP: HP should win this game being at home, but I don't think they'll do it.. CSU matches up better & should force HP to score against the gap zone defense that CSU runs pretty well.. Both of these teams are known to fade at the end of conference play so it's a tough call.. HP's recent win over CCU will hurt them in this one though..

LU/GW: Liberty should continue to gel with KO back in the lineup.. a little too much for GW even at home..

Okay. Lets start some wild speculation.

CCU: should win out and win the league with a 15-3 record.

Radford: I say they win out. Finish 13-5

WU: I think Winthrop goes 2-2. They are playing good ball right now. And I'm not sure if we can beat them in Rock Hill, but with that jammed schedule it doesn't seem crazy to think they will drop a couple to us, HPU, and Radford. It might depend on how they play EKU (hoping for an OT game, anyone?). Four games in 8 days is tough (Five in eleven if you count the first round). Everyone gets gassed eventually, maybe they'll make it through until the tourney, who knows. I'm a homer, so I'll say they lose to UNCA and Radford. Finish 12-6.

UNCA: This is me being an optimist/homer. We win out. Finish 12-6.

That puts us in a tie for third with Winthrop. Someone remind me again if we win by via the sweep or lose it due to our record against Coastal.

It also seems likely (realistic?) that we lose to WInthrop because we go on the road and shoot 20%, lose our heads and just throw up bad shots for the rest of the game (aka pull a beach trip). Thus, begrudgingly giving their much more talent laden roster a one game lead over us and dropping us to 11-7 and a possible tie with HPU since I think Liberty will lose one or both of their beach trip games. More likely is sole possession of fourth place with HPU and Liberty both losing 2 of their remaining games.

WInner of the tournament: whoever gets hot. I don't see a favorite. I do like how scheduling works in our favor, Out of the top six we are the only team without four games. Maybe I'm putting too much into scheduling. But, it could make for an interesting tourney.

Re: BIG SOUTH STANDINGS

I like this game... I believe that head to head is the first tie-breaker.. then it's record against higher standing teams but not 100%..

CCU- Has the easiest & most restful schedule remaining IMO- I think the biggest threat to loss will be the VMI game- if CCU has the league title locked up & VMI is playing for their playoff lives, I can see VMI winning the last game

WU- tough schedule 5 games including 3 on the road- GW needs to win tonight to help get into the tourney, BB game is worthless but I think you have to play similarly, play your starters etc.. just for consistency purposes, UNCA & HP will need to keep winning to keep the 4th seed or obtain the 4th seed- Radford will want to have the highest seeding possible & momentum going into the tourney.. I think WU goes 2-2- they're playing well but so far only decent win is over Coastal this past 10 games.. I think tonights GW game could be interesting but GW is a bad team...

Radford- I think they win out.. 3-0

UNCA- 2-1 but I'm hoping tonight's not the one.. Presby has NOTHING to lose & they play us well down there + we're horrible on the road- i think we win this one in a game closer than we would like.. I think we can beat WU as well, but given our road struggles I wouldn't bet on it.. GW is Homecoming & this game could boil down to what scenario GW has going on for tourney implications.. we play well in front of a full house at the JC so I'll take whatever GW's situation presents..

HP- trying to get that 4th seed!!But I can see them going 1-3 these last 4 games.. I think VMI will surprise them tonight, LU is also battling for the 4 seed + that games at LU & LU needs redemption after getting blasted by HP ealrier this year.. WU should win.. Presby in the last game of the year for PC- who want's to play a team with NOTHING to lose??

Liberty- will lose to RU, beat HP, lose to CCU, CSU is a toss up for me- CSU is great at home, but this game won't mean anything to them as they're pretty much going to be the 7 seed.. I think LU wins unless CSU can pick up a higher standing.

CSU- is fading fast- they'll go 1-2 the last 3 games.... will lose to CCU, can beat VMI, will prob lose to LU- I could pick CSU to go 0-3 just as easily though as I think the other teams have more motivation..

VMI- playing to get into the BSC tourney!! 2-1.. may beat HP, beat CSU, depending on CCU's position could beat CCU but not if CCU needs this game for any reason..

GW- playing to get in, if they pull off the upset over WU I think they go 2-1, however, I'm predicting they go 0-3.. lose to WU, lose to Presby, lose to UNCA

Presby- 5 games remaining for their red-shirt gamble year to conclude.. dangerous team that I think will go 2-2 to finish the year.. GW, @ HP are the wins..

Someone remind me...semi-finals of BSC tourny go 1v4 and 2v3, correct? Seems to me it benefits us big time to be able to jump over Radford and/or Winthrop here. I know you have to beat everyone at some point but, I'd live with a 3 seed having to play winthrop/radford and trying to make it back to championship game for 2nd time in the last few years.
