Right now we have:

2011 (2): Stubbs, John
2012 (5): JP, Quinard, Dickey, Stepheson, big fella
2013 (4): Terrance, Austin, Jaron, DJ
2014 (2): Toles,Meyer

So right now we do not technically have any available scholarships to give. The fact that we are offering scholarships means that you have to think that somebody will transfer, get asked to leave (which I hate), have to leave due to grades, or graduate and then not come back.

Even though we've offered a scholarship, it doesn't mean we have to honor it if somebody else accepts it before them. We could offer 50 guys a scholarship with only one available and say, "The first one to accept will get it." And then once that person accepts, the other 49 guys will not officially have an offer.

We are probably going to pick up one more, which would help to round out our class by class breakdown. Or more? If we put out several offers how many do we honor (and are we obligated to them)?

Hopefully the local is a Corey Hensley from Enka.

Alum is right- it is first come first serve in terms of offers- we will have to honor 13 number of committments based on the total scholarship allocation.. We are still offering scholarships with the 2 players signed so I'm not going to elaborate (as I do not know any specifics anyway) but I think it's easy math.. addition by subtraction.. I think we add more than just 1 more but that is just pure speculation on my part..

Hensley was at the Presby game Saturday evening.. Big bodied kid- would be curious to see how well he moves on the court as I am unfamiliar with him other than he can definitely score & rebound the basketball.. almost 29.8 pts/game with 11.9 boards/game isn't too shabby.. We have a 7-footer who visited a few weeks back coming back for a 2nd visit soon..

Our transfer lefty guard is not on scholarship next year- he will be a walk-on as he chose to come to UNCA from Penn.. he was on the bench this past weekend as well so it's no secret.. Smart player, played with Seth Curry in HS (Charlotte Christian)..

Firstly, welcome to the doggers fold, Carson! Coming in mid-year next year is tough though. I've got my own speculations about who is most likely to transfer this year.

This might be one of the few years I might lean towards not picking up a seven footer. Shock, I know. It certainly would be telling about the feelings about Hobbs if we picked him up. I'm not sure about moving DJ to forward and playing a 7 footer or splitting DJ's time, assuming he continues to progress. Best case scenario might be to red-shirt him (I imagine that would be in his basketball interest as well) and have a good two year transition from DJ to the 7 footer.

I dont know what is up with Hobbs. Sometimes it just takes longer for big guys to 'get it'. DJ seems to 'get it' from day one and looks like he could be special. You can never have too many guys in the 6'11-7'0 range because you just don't know how they will develop. The light could come on for Hobbs this summer or next year and he will be a world beater. However I think the kid transfers to an engineering school. From what I heard he is more interested in building robots than playing basketball, and there's nothing wrong with that. But that is why you get as many bigs as you can. Honestly it is easier to find good guards than good big guys.

I agree about DJ having a bright future. He's tough, aggressive, and competitive to go along with being skilled. Plays with a little mean streak. I think he'll be the best player in the league by the time he's a junior.

Oiy!! We call him "Fat Fingahs".. He was fiery & loved to pick up those cheap fouls retaliating on players running up the court in transition like someone else I used to watch & laugh at how similar it was to me!!

I hear DJ has a similar temperament- So we should be good then!!

Refs are always looking at the post, you can throw a few cheap ones in transition. :D

I thought he had a mean streak, but then later in the season I started to have some doubts when he ran around the court like a 7th grade schoolgirl after Alex Kragel hit a certain 18ft jumper.

Maybe we are thinking of a different person.

Couple of others that we are looking at, I think the first guy may have already been listed.

http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p= ... id=3675181

(Pretty sure he has an offer.)

http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p= ... id=4572704

(No offer. Saw this guy play tonight. Little bit stronger than Vincent James, but very similar type athletes / players. This guy plays very hard.)

We have offered Cannon from Mountain Heritage. Sounds like he would be a good pick-up, but there are a lot of hats in that ring. I quote the entire blurb because it was part of the sports blog and will inevitably be moved down on the page.

http://blogs.citizen-times.com/blogs/index.php?blog=15

UNC Asheville is the latest Division I program to offer a basketball scholarship to Mountain Heritage center John Cannon. Cannon has previously been offered scholarships to Appalachian State, High Point, Richmond, USC Upstate and Western Carolina. Based off discussions with Utah's coaching staff, Cougars coach Barry Johnson said that he expects the Utes to offer the 6-foot-11 junior in the spring. Cannon ripped down a career-high 20 rebounds and scored 13 points Thursday in a 71-65 win over Avery County.

Academics are very important to Cannon from what I hear.. you can mark some of those schools off of that list.. we're a longshot to get him because he'll probably go higher than SoCon, BigSouth, etc type conferences... The same can be said about Hornsby.. but if they go Big South they're not going anywhere else..

Wishon has been on campus once already & has a 2nd visit planned & upcoming...

Those "Just wait until the spring and we'll offer you then" is recruiting code words for "Well we are hoping to get somebody else. But if they go elsewhere and you are still available, we might recruit you."

Regardless of whether or not he goes to UNCA, I hope he doesn't screwed by waiting around on that Utah offer that might not ever come.

Why would he want to go out to Utah anyway? I can see wanting to go to a higher level, but Utah? Meh.

I thought he was a senior when I originally said it. It's actually not that bad when a kid is a junior to say that you are going to wait until the spring. Might need more time to evaluate.

But if this guy is getting legitimate interest from Utah as a junior.. gotta think we have no chance at him.

Huge Verbal Committment today from an underclassmen.. would come to UNCA Fall 2011.. Should be some updates to the recruiting boards over the next week or so I imagine.. Yes I know this is just a verbal from a HS junior but we have some relationship things in place that will secure this until the Spring signing period open April 14th.. Only thought is due to the exposure this kid will get now, this summer (Boo Williams), & next year- if he blows up, we could end up losing him..

Otherwise.. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS..... if you catch my drift...

Also one player so far is transferring (unknown destination), slight disappointment to me & prob others here but someone who played very sparingly this year..

More news to come I'm sure..

kingaling.... in the spirit of mutual cooperation...... I'd be glad to forward your high school junior verbal commitment my picture of your gym. Or better still... you can just copy and paste it and email it yourself....

with your artistic talents you displayed on the other pic from Western, you probably can even draw in a few stick people to improve the crowd. Good Luck with this recruit.

Wow. Hopefully everything will pan out for us. Many welcomes to the newbie. If the commitment ever goes solid we may have to make an unwritten ban to a certain song (posters at games would be a loophole). He certainly looks like he is equipped for an awesome career in Asheville.

If it is Austin, well... He was the one I was/am most worried about leaving.

It's not AA.. double initials seem to be a trend..

Hopefully our Verbal today will become a package deal for his senior teammate (who is visiting Radford this weekend)- and is one I'm particularly interested in aside from the junior.. Even if that does not work out for this year, the ripples from signing this other kid will certainly help recruiting next year.. again more to come soon..

Pu$$y... this kid will come upon the completion of the new arena in 2011 but thanks for the BS- besides he was being highly recruited by ODU among others, ODU happened to beat Notre Dame today in the tourney if you aren't aware & he committed after that game ended- so I don't think you've got a chance to help us when we obviously are doing something right..

Good luck filling the RAC next year (did that even happen this year with all the wins? Hint.. no!) All the progress WCU thought they made went down the toilet when your lost to your Pappy Appy at home in the 2nd meeting.. just worry about your new message board Cat's & go back to your litter box.. Just pretend it's Jan 30th again...

She's certainly not my AD, I promise you that...

Sean Smith is all world shooter right?? All he needs is a fade screen.. I almost forgot- weren't you going to send me some plays so I can pass them along with all your other basetball pearls of wisdom.. Question is will you be leaving us too upon Sean's graduation? I wish you luck..

It's always amazing that all the negative a$$holes show up when there's positive news around here- & people say I'm critical...

It doesn't matter. Whatever recruiting gems are picked up will be turned to crap by the Dean of the Big South and Co. You guys just don't get it. As long as your team has D3 coaches, the Bulldogs ain't winnning anything.

You call me an a$$hole, but thinking the future is anything but mediocre makes you a putz.
