Big South Action

Postby kingaling42 on Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:55 pm

Just an exhibition but Liberty beat VCU 85-69.. Talbert led the way with 23 points and only missed one shot tonight.. didn't hurt for the Flames to shoot 50% from 3.. Khris Lane still taking L's vs Big South teams!

The article didn't say anything about Caleb Homesley. After doing research Ritchie said he has not yet been cleared for 5 on 5 yet. I wouldn't be surprised to seem him not play until december. That gives him 6 games to get himself ready for conference play.

Also Mccay said this is the first time he has had more than 1 back to the basket player since he returned to liberty. Two of those guys are transfers both 6-7 225 from Akron and Bradley.

I know alot of people are not high on them this year but I think they finish 2nd in the conference and challenge UNCA in the big south tournament. That is assuming Caleb Homesley is ready to go for conference play! Otherwise I give the Nod to Winthrop for 2

Defenses weren't allowed, apparently.

Dropping 51 in the first half is pretty impressive. The second half was more the average.

Not being cleared for 5 on 5 seems like rough news for them. Ot can take so long to get post injury confidence back. Even when you can play again.

It's finally here. A lot of good action from Big South teams

Campbell at Penn State
Ga SW at Radford
Southern Illinois at Winthrop
CSU at Davidson
Clarks Summit weekly bible study group vs Liberty
PC at Tennessee
GWebb at Miami
William and Mary at HPU

Besides the Radford and Liberty games - these are a good set of games.

Winthrop has a chance at a Missouri Valley win over a Salukis team where everyone except the team manager is injured. The Campbell game is interesting. PSU returns a lot of people, but I am interested to see which Campbell team shows up. HPU could make it interesting at home. Miami will run wild. I think Davidson and UT run the table.

Winthrop looked pretty rusty for a bit in the first half, but they seemed to have settled some.

It also seems to me that they are stretching the size capacity of the Arial Black font with their name on the floor. That's new, right?

Also, as a current resident, I can confirm that it is Silver Spring, Maryland for the Winthrop athletic dept. Not Silver Springs.

Fouls and turnovers. Getting spotty coverage, but seem to be seeing a lot of those.

Overall awful night for Big South, save High Point. Disappointing nights for us and WU.

Any word on why Keeling hasn’t played this year?

You guy's might not have been, but I was quite surprised to see Rackley start. He looked a lot better and controlled than last year. I don't think it was a smart idea to start both Wnuk and Rackley together though, maybe one or the other. We were way too small and had no rebounding bigs out there. McDevitt really needs to adjust that line-up come next week vs Vanderbilt. They will dominate us on the board's and we don't need another rough and slow start to the game

David Shelton (who is the closest thing to a beat writer that CSU has down here for the Charleston newspaper) said that Keeling's out due to a violation of team rules...unknown how many games he will miss.

I was surprised to see Keeling not play at all either! Their second leading returner Cortez Mitchell didn't play either!

Surprising to see Javis Howard who played 29 mpg for them last year come off the bench and only play 20. I can't really judge them without their two top returning scorers playing!

I know it was only the first game but High Point looked really impressive. Last year all I heard about was Jahaad Proctor (Iona) and Brandon Kamga (Northeastern) were the two best players on the team and they couldn't play because of transfer rules! Proctor had 28 and Kamga had 18. Last year we had no depth. This year we have depth. HPU can put 9-10 guys on the court that can actually play useful minutes. Andre Fox now can play his game and doesn't have to be the go to guard as he had 22 as well.

I think this team is building for next year. They only lose Austin White as a valuable senior! Proctor and Kamga are only sophmores and fox will have one more year. Again we have a transfer from UTEP in Tim Cameron that has to sit out. From what I hear in practice he is the best player on the floor. It will be exciting next year to throw a lineup out of Fox, Kamga, Proctor, Cameron and Madison. Just maybe HPU will win their first Big South title next year. Might be tough to get past Campbell or Liberty next year though.

Again I know its only first game but it is exciting to see!

GWU- dropped a three point loss to UCF - Would have been a good win
Radford beat ECU on the road - A bad American Athletic Conference team, but still a good win.
CSU beat some DII

Clemons played 29 minutes but had foot injury in the 2nd half on the UNCW game so was then limited.

He did not play against Johnson & Wales but that doesn't mean much against that opponent.

Campbell plays again on Friday vs Abilene Christian in the first of 3 back-to-back-to-back games. We'll learn more about his injury in his playing time this weekend.

Presbyterian continues its skid - yesterday against Nicholls state. They play Chicago State today. Really hoping they can pick up a win in the non-conference.

Pretty good games on Black Friday.
Winthrop at Auburn today. Gwebb at Wright State. HPU against Charlotte.

Not Big South, but Rhode Island beat #20 Seton Hall. Hampton picked up a win against Northern Arizona (who is winless so far). Hampton will play Rider today.

Xavier Cooks did not play against Auburn today! Kelsey said "Xavier's actions yesterday while competing at practice were unbecoming of a Winthrop basketball player. We are working with him to learn to channel his emotions constructively. We hold our players to a high standard. I'm excited to see his response tomorrow at practice."

WinthropEagleFan anything you know? To me just sound's like nothing and he didn't want to practice on Thanksgiving! I'm sure he will be first team all Big South!

Must be hard going into a season not having Keon Johnson there.

No clue what happened, though it isn't the most surprising thing to see (he is a fiery guy who has had issues with technical fouls in his career), but this team isn't ready to compete without him on the court...not that they would have likely won last night if he did play, buy I doubt it would have been a 30 point game either.

HPU- I wouldn't say that suspending your best player for a marquee game isn't 'nothing'.. will it have long-term negative effects? Probably not (unless it was a beef with other teammate(s) which could cause long-term concerns)- I'd venture it sends a strong message to all about whatever conduct was displayed.. but I highly doubt Kelsey thought it was 'nothing'.. despite his fiery nature- Cooks has typically responded well after technical fouls so I'd expect him to be just fine..

Kingaling what I meant by nothing is I don't believe this will be a on going issue. I'm sure Cooks was going half *** through practice and Kelsey wanted to make a example out of his best player! Cooks is in his Senior year and will want to put up the best numbers he can so he can get a great contract over seas next year.

Also Clemons sat out another game tonight. I don't know the Injury but will be interesting to see if this is something that lingers for him all year!

I think Campbell and Radford have been big suprises for me so far this year! Radford beat James Madison tonight.

I think this is going to be a very fun and exciting Big South regular season and conference tourney! Last year was really strong 1-4 but I truly believe every single team can beat anybody 1-8. I think this league is more balanced this year. I still think Presbyterian and Longwood are bottom in the league!

35 days away from Big South Regular Season. Only 93 days till the Big South Tournament!

Turned on PC / UNCG with six secs left and saw the Hose win at the buzzer.

PC’s play by play is an absolute riot. Most entertaining commentary I’ve heard this decade. His call for the win was glorious.

The play-by-play screaming about it going to count is great stuff.

I watched most of the second half. Dillard is still good. Kay and Tete are good. I kind of missed the context, but PC was having to play smaller due to injury. UNCG plays some trapping zone pressure which might give us trouble.

Good win for PC. Kerns getting some buy-in and could win some conference games
