Coach Nash/Mars Hill Update

Postby GoUNCA on Thu Feb 19, 2009 8:16 am

Coach Nash has done a really good job up the road at Mars Hill. They are 14-9 and with a win will clinch their first winning season since 1998. Article is by the Citizen-Times. Impressive turnaround.

Ok- I don't mean to sound the way this is going to look.. but being familiar with Mars Hills' returning team as I have a friend who played/graduated from there last year... Coach Nash inherited a pretty good team coming into this first year, remember they had 14 wins last year as well & were only 2 games below .500 at 14-16 last year- yes it is an improvement this year but 6 seniors & 5 juniors on a 15 man squad doesn't hurt the cause.. yes he has gotten them to play well this year, but I'm not completely sold on him as a head coach yet personally... Let's see how he brings in talent in the next few years & produces versus just using the parts furnished by another coach... Just my thoughts based on his work ethic while at UNCA- maybe he actually gets to work before noon now- I dunno...

I hadn't done this in a while, so here has what happened since last time. It's nice to keep up with former UNC Ashevillians. If there are others out there we should be following feel free to add a thread.

Last year Mars Hill finished 17-11 (like above, it was their first winning season since 98). As of right now they are 8-7 overall (3-2 in the SAC) with a close loss to a good Catawba program being the most recent game.

Mars Hill finished the season in 5th place in the SAC..

Lions had 5 wins vacated due to the use of an ineligible player in 8 games (5 wins, 3 losses)- final record reflected as 5-6 SAC, 10-13 Overall..

3 years at Mars Hill
2008-09- 17-11 (7-9); 7th of 9 teams
2009-10- 10-13 (5-6); 5th of 9 teams; 8 games vacated due to ineligible player
2010-11- 10-16 (7-11); 9th of 10 teams

Not so impressive..

Not sure it matters about his hair.. Nash "retired" from coaching back in late February.. Now that was a joke!
